ObamaCare's Rules for Special Enrollment Periods & Open Enrollment for Colorado Health Insurance

Learn More

Millions of Americans experience Special Enrollment Period events each year:

  • 2.1 million Americans get married
  • 24 million Americans change jobs, most losing employer health benefits
  • 7.1 million Americans move to another state
  • 1.8 million move to America from another country

The Affordable Care Act, better known as ObamaCare created rules for how and when individuals and families can get health insurance outside of coverage offered through a job.

This holds true, UNLESS you have a life change or job change that creates a qualifying event that triggers a special enrollment period Special Enrollment periods only last for 60 days from the date of the qualifying event and acceptable qualifying events can vary from on-exchange to off-exchange, as well as from one state to the next, so it’s critical to work with a qualified local agent or broker to help you compare, evaluate and enroll in private health insurance  plans.

Open Enrollment rules apply to both on-exchange and off-exchange (direct from insurer) individual and family health insurance plans that meet ObamaCare’s minimum essential benefit requirements.

In Colorado, Open Enrollment for individual health insurance plans closed on January 15th, 2024 and reopens again on November 1st, 2024. Request a free health insurance quote today!
